An Uxbridge young woman, who has set up a club for disabled children with her own money, is London’s Young Person of the Year.

Two south London schoolgirls, who turned their terrible behaviour around to become ‘Leading Ladies’, are the capital’s Young People of the Year.

Mercia Perin, of Walworth Place, Walworth, and Betsy Eguavoen, of Upper Tulse Hill, Brixton, were presented with their awards known as ‘YOPEYs’, by Lady Ghazala Hameed, the High Sheriff of Greater London, in a lavish ceremony at the ArtsTwo building of Queen Mary University of London in the East End.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson has become the latest political leader to endorse YOPEY following, among others, Prime Minister David Cameron and Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband when they were leaders of their parties.

Boris said: “London is full of talented young people who are doing amazing things to help their communities.

"It is fantastic that Young People of the Year are showcasing the achievements of these role models and encouraging more youngsters to strive to be the best they can.”
