Chris tunes into volunteering on 3 radio stations

Student Chris Milligan gives up his free time for air time – volunteering with three community radio stations.

After volunteering at Easter to help Vibe 107.6 FM in Watford he graduated to producing and presenting shows for that station and also does similar volunteering at two stations in Southampton, where he is in his second year studying multimedia journalism at the city's university.

Now Chris is tuned into Smith-Milne Young People of the Year competition which recognises, reveals and rewards those who give to others.

Abby organises marathon swim in name of teen with tumour

When teenager Abby Gee heard that her good friend and fellow swimmer Will Rodger had been diagnosed with a brain tumour she decided to do something positive.

She used her contacts and encouraged other swimmers – including an Olympic competitor - to take part in a marathon event which raised more than £5,000 for Teenage Cancer Trust.

Girlguiding leader Zara follows in historic footsteps...

Guiding is in the genes of Welwyn Garden City teenager Zara Hoy. Her mum is a Brown Owl, her grandmother was a brownie leader, her grandad a scout leader, her great grandmother was one of the first of what became brownies and her great grandfather actually shook the hand of scouting’s founder Robert Baden-Powell.

A Hitchin teenager who has changed from being a handful to a responsible leader with army cadets is in a contest that salutes the achievements of young people in Hertfordshire.

Thomas (Tom) Ellwood went from being a bad boy clowning around to sergeant and now trains younger cadets.  

And in another about-turn for the unit, former shy cadet Laurence Thompson has turned into a confident adult instructor.

A sport-loving Hertford girl who encourages youngsters to play football has scored an entry in a competition that hails the achievements of young people in Hertfordshire.

Zoe Martin is motivated by trying to give people the best opportunities they can have and she mentors a football team for girls under 10.

Sixth-former Katherine Padley is a Hatfield school prefect with responsibilities for charity fundraising. Katherine leads aspects of Onslow St Audrey’s parliament system and motivated pupils to take part in a mock general election in May.
