Essex police support YOPEY

Essex Police is sponsoring its second Young People of the Year or 'YOPEY' – the antidote to all the bad press about the younger generation.

Police forces have been increasingly involved in YOPEY (pronounced yop-ee) since it started in Hertfordshire five years ago and has spread to eight other counties and the whole of Scotland.

But go-ahead Essex Police became the first force to become a main sponsor alongside Essex Police Authority in 2008. The two bodies are currently sponsoring their second Essex YOPEY in 2009-10.

Bon Voyage to Michael

BON VOYAGE to Michael Perham, a finalist in Watford and Three Rivers competition last year when at the age of 14 he became the youngest person to sail single-handed across the Atlantic.

The inspirational 16-year-old from Potters Bar has now set off on his latest venture – a bid to become the youngest person to circumnavigate the world without stopping which will mean that he will be away from his family for four months and only able to contact them by satellite link-ups.

Money raised will go towards Save the Children and the Tall Ships Youth Trust.

Congratulations to Adam!

CONGRATULATIONS to Adam Pickering, organiser of the Hockley Hustle, who won a special prize of a holiday at AquaCity in last year’s SkillsTrain competition in Nottinghamshire.

Adam was nominated because of his work in organising the Hustle, a series of musical events in pubs, bars and cafes around Nottingham that raised around £3,000, making a total of £5,000 in two years.

YOPEY Liam is Pride of Britain winner

CONGRATULATIONS to inspirational Liam Fairhurst, junior winner of the YOPEY competition in Cambridgeshire last year, for winning the title of Child of Courage at the Daily Mirror Pride of Britain awards.

The brave 13-year-old has now raised more than £150,000 for children's cancer charity CLIC Sargent while twice fighting the disease himself.

In addition to picking up the award he was offered a holiday in the Caribbean courtesy of Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson and a swimming lesson from double Olympic gold medallist Rebecca Adlington.
